Chikkaballapura District is the birth place of legendary engineer Sir M Visvesvarayya, the birth place of Dr. H. Narasimhaiah, Great Educationalist & Thinker. Many historic temples and several reputed educational institutions are situated in the region. It is a regional transport and educational hub, and is a major site for grape, grain, and silk cultivation.

A $400 million Pharmaceutical SEZ is coming up in Chikkaballapura on 325 acres, the first of its kind in India. A $1 billion Integrated Industrial Park has been proposed to the Government and necessary approvals obtained from the authorities, this should generate employment to about 2,00,000 people. A state of the art Bus Terminus, a new District Government Headquarters and police headquarters are being constructed. In addition, the state government is releasing over $10 million to develop and expand underground sanitary systems.

An assessment of the existing level of infrastructure and current service levels in the town formed the basis for the infrastructure development programme and associated investment plan for the coming years in various sectors like Sewerage & Sanitation, Water Supply, Roads, Traffic & Transportation, Street Lighting, Storm Water Drain, Solid Waste Management, Social Infrastructure and much more.

With recent development, it is widely believed that Chikkaballapura will become a part of "Greater Bangalore."
